The stromatolites in Hamelin Pool

The last night we spent in Hamelin Pool on the premises of the old Telegraph Station. This is one of the places where stromatolites still grow. If you are en route to Shark Bay, and want to stop before tackling the last 100 kilometers, this is a great spot.

These bacterial limestone formations are considered to be the oldest organically formed formations on earth and are up to 3.5 billion years old. Here in Shark Bay the water is about twice as salty as in the sea, so that the usual predators of stromatolites (e.g. snails) do not live here. This means they can still grow here, although at 0.3mm/year they are really slow.
