Dongara and the Irwin Heritage River TrailOn 3. September 2019 by Cookie
Dongara and Port Denison, twin cities with about 3.700 inhabitants, are situated at the mouth of the Irwin River. There are a few short trails here. We tried the Irwin Heritage River Trail.
While Port Denison is dominated by the fishing port and the nice promenade with the memorial, Dongara has a rather rural charme and a small main street. At night everything’s deserted, other than the Motel – there was Bingo Night, probably.
From the 24h-Parking beneath the Town Oval it’s just a short walk to the town centre. There, you can get anything you need for everyday life (supermarket, pharmacy, fishing gear) and there are a few hotels, motels and pubs. We had a look around and walked on to the Irwin River Lookout. It offers a nice view over the River to the sea and Port Denison, and it’s the starting point for a few trails. A short walk on the Irwin Heritage River Trail led us to the boardwalk at the river’s mouth and back again.
