The old One Mile Jetty in CarnarvonOn 11. September 2019 by Cookie
alias: Mad Max City?
That was my brother’s association when he saw my photos. The old One Mile Jetty in Carnarvon, linking to town to the rest of the world since the end of the 19th century, and the old tramway leading there, are in desolate condition.
The road leading to Carnarvon was quite bad until the 1950ies. (Incredibly, thinking about Carnarvon’s contribution to the moon landing only a few years later.) Thus, the Jetty was the main way of transporting everything, from humans to kettle to produce.
1900, the Jetty was linked to the town via a tramway. The rails are still there, even if they are rusty and in parts broken. In front of the entrance to the One Mile Jetty, old machinery, engines and other devices are exposed to the elements and to the salt in the air. It’s looking quite impressive – “Mad Max” it is not, fortunately.
